Golf: Why Algarve is so special

Boasting a number of elite-level courses, Algarve is an award-winning destination with uniquely attractive features for golfers and golf enthusiasts alike. Renowned magazine "Today's Golfer” even named the region as the Best Golf Destination in Continental Europe between 2017 and 2020.

Popular in Scotland — where the first officially recognized course is located, just outside of Glasgow — golf is a game whose exact origin is debated to this very day. So popular was it in Scottish lands, that King James II (in 1457) banished it, as it was a huge distraction for troops in charge of defending the kingdom.

In Portugal, the game arrived at the end of the 19th century, more precisely in Espinho, where the English colony of Porto created the Oporto Niblicks Club in 1890. Today the country has more than 90 different courses, receiving plaudits and regular awards as Best Golf destination in Europe and also in the World.

The Algarve turns out to be the biggest highlight, due to the large cluster of quality fields (well over 30). Natural focus also to the privileged climate and the magnificent views provided by the courses, most of them located in protected areas of enormous natural beauty!

It is a paradise for golfers from all corners of the world, with courses whose architecture has the signature of legendary champions of the sport, offering varying conditions and distinct degrees of difficulty. It is suitable for more experienced golfers or even just sport enthusiasts who want to work on their swing!
